Austin, TX-based singer-songwriter Carly Jo Jackson and I have known each other for over ten years, having first met while living in Orlando, FL. I’ve always wanted to collaborate with her in some capacity, and I’m so grateful she entrusted me to produce a song for her. Her voice has always reminded me of artists like Colbie Caillat, ZZ Ward, and KT Tunstall—catchy, soulful, and effortlessly engaging. I wanted to create something that captured the energy of their live band sound while still preserving her signature pop edge.

When Carly sent me the demo for Good Boy, sung alongside just a ukulele, I immediately reimagined it with a rhythm guitar-driven, full-band arrangement. Something about it reminded me of Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman, and I wanted to bring that kind of groove to the production. Since she was only able to fly in for a few days, we had to work quickly. With her permission, I restructured the demo in advance and called on my bandmates—John Robert Bridges III and Dave Clark—to track electric guitars and bass in a style reminiscent of Tracy Chapman.

When Carly arrived, we got straight to work, recording her vocals and harmonies with an M49a Kit mic borrowed from Melissa Harris Chambers—who also mixed and mastered the track. Melissa built this mic herself, modeling it after the legendary Neumann M49 tube mic, known for its rich, warm sound.

After completing Carly’s vocal sessions, we brought in Ryan Sanford on drums and Jeff Donovick on organ to round out the arrangement. Working on this song with such a talented team was an incredible experience. Carly’s openness made the creative process effortless, and her impeccable sense of humor kept the sessions lively and fun.

"Working with Ashley Dudukovich in the studio was an all around wonderful experience for many reasons.

She is a musician. This gives her an extensive amount of knowledge on how to make an artist feel comfortable and fully heard while creating. With this, she holds a deep understanding of a wide range of production styles and is able to pick up on relative sounds flawlessly to provide exactly what the artist needs.

She is an accomplished songwriter. During my time in the studio with Ashley, she was quickly able to provide help with lyrics and melody when I was drawing blanks. She shares her experiences as a professional songwriter with you along the way to help expand your own skills, during and beyond the recording process.

She is quirky and fun, but still gets down to business. Although Ashley and I became friends quite a while ago, every day we spent in the studio together felt like spending it with your new best friend. She listens intently to what’s going on in the artists’ world to further understand the depth of the sound and message in your song. We dove in and talked about so many things yet still we got so much work done, and in a matter of days we completed a song that I hold so dear to my heart. I couldn’t be happier with the final result.

The process of creating with Ashley as your guide is fun and easy. Her expertise in the music and recording world is a blessing to artists anywhere looking to make their ideas come to life!"
